For Charles Fernyhough, the birth of his daughter was an opportunity to re-evaluate much of what he had learned as a lecturer and researcher in developmental psychology. Drawing on the notes he kept on her development, he uses her story as an entry point into an account of how the child’s mind develops before the age of three.
